Developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s, Pilates engages the mind and the body to provide a full body workout. Pilates is a comprehensive, whole-body system of exercises designed to balance the body's muscles, strengthen the core, and create a flexible, strong, able body. Unlike workouts that stress exercising to exhaustion, Pilates focuses on executing movements with good technique to retrain the mind and muscles. ’The Pilates technique encompasses more than 500 controlled, precise movements designed to strengthen and stretch without adding bulk. Best of all – there is variety in every workout, so boredom is never a problem!
Pilates is practiced through the use of spring resistant machines and through a series of floor exercises designed to use the body's power center, or “core”. Pilates exercises allow the student to work on alignment while correcting muscular imbalances. Performed slowly, these efficient, highly controlled movements engage the entire body.
Breathing is an essential part of the exercise and is synchronized with the movements. Using fewer repetitions than other forms of exercise, and complete focus of movement and breath, this method leads to increased body awareness and improved posture and alignment. The movements are performed in supine, sitting, kneeling or standing positions.
